So Proud

Just look at that posture!

Practice makes perfect!  And we've been practicing a lot!!  Any time we can, we sit Miles up and see how long it takes for him to fall over.  He has been getting better and better... until finally yesterday he just wowed me!

I sat him down in front of the TV for his favorite show, International Super Spy on Backyardagains (as I am wont to do when the house needs a quick clean up before guests arrive), and could hardly believe my eyes!  My baby wasn't falling over!!  So of course I grabbed the iPhone and started recording.  The video was much longer, but I thought 12 seconds was enough to give you the gist... there's only so long you can watch a baby just sit and do nothing really...

Just as I suspected -- bath time is a thousand times easier!  He's still a tad shaky, but it'll only get better from here!

Next up... crawling!!  Just do it already kid, the suspense is killing me!

Downtown Music

We made a new friend today.  This is Mike, our friendly neighborhood saxophone player!  He started playing in Dallas about 5 years ago and has been kicked out of many a street corner.  But if you look closely at SpiderMan, the container between his legs says DONATIONS.  Which the Judge declared is completely legal.  So please stop harassing him downtown police officers!  And let us enjoy the music!

Fight the MAN Mike, fight the Man
This sleepy baby loves listening to Mike play

Cutie Patootie

I may be slightly biased... but I love everything about these pictures.  I love these pajamas - the colors are awesome and they are the warmest, softest things ever.  I love that the toys are in every inch of the frame, because that is what our life is full of now - baby.  I love the look he's giving his doll - his eyes are so dark and intimidating.  And I love it when he looks back at me like - what now mom?

Thank you Auntie Ro Ro for my new puppy dog

Thank you iPhone filters app - 1974!

Cute and Sleepy Baby

Miles loves to smack the crap out of the music player on his exasaucer.  And while he's hitting it he gets the BIGGEST smile on his face, like he is just so happy to be beating up the baby jail we keep him in.

So of course we had to get it on video... and of course the second the camera turned on he stopped doing it and started kissing it instead!  The video is cute, but why don't babies ever do what you want them to do when the video camera is rolling??  What's Newton's Theory - for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction (or something like that).  Well Baby Theory is -  for every baby action you want to record there is an opposite and unequal action for the video camera!  Or something like...

Where was I?  Oh yes... please enjoy the video...

Recipe for Disaster

Those are the lyrics to this adorable Backyardagains song... and now I will be singing that all day long!  But I do have a recipe to share.  About 2 weeks ago I realized that my milk supply was decreasing yet again.  I know, I know -- I'm a broken record if I've ever heard one... so let me cut to the chase.  I found this recipe on a breastfeeding forum and haven't stopped eating these cookies since!  It's a recipe for oatmeal cookies with flaxseed and brewers yeast (which all are supposed to help your milk supply) and these are probably the most delicious cookies I've ever made. And they have completely solved my problem! (for now)

Ingredients:
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons flaxseed meal*
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups oats, thick cut if you can get them
1 cup or more chocolate chips
2 tablespoons of brewers yeast** (be generous)

Directions:
Preheat oven at 375 degrees F. Mix together 2
tablespoons of flaxseed meal and water, set aside for 3-5 minutes.

Cream (beat well) butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, mix
well. Stir flaxseed mixture and add with vanilla to the margarine
mix. Beat until blended.

Sift together dry ingredients, except oats and chips. Add to margarine mixture.
Stir in oats then chips.

Scoop or drop onto baking sheet, preferably lined with parchment or
silpat. The dough is a little crumbly, so it helps to use a scoop.

Bake 8-12 minutes, depending on size of cookies.

Serves: 6 dozen cookies

**IT MUST BE BREWERS YEAST, NO SUBSTITUTIONS.

Now, I have no idea how many other mothers have as much trouble breastfeeding as I've had, but obviously some do because these forums and websites exist.  It's just amazing to me that all this information is not more readily available to first time moms.  I feel like I have had to search high and low for every little bit of information that I've gotten.  Randomly my sister-in-law told me about the beer with hops and how that might help with my milk supply.  Then, randomly again another breastfeeding mom mentioned Fenugreek.  The midwife at the birth center just happened to suggest a warm bath to help my milk produce.  And then I had to blog about my troubles before a friend suggested oatmeal.  I feel like I've been pulling teeth to get all this information.  And maybe it's out there in some magical book, but none of the books I've read suggested all of those things, they say things like balanced diet and lots of water.  Also, I didn't take any classes or call the Le Leche Club, so I can't comment on how helpful those may have been.  But I don't think you should have to take an extra class or pay for extra help to get some simple ideas.  Or to be told important things like - 'around 5 months your milk supply may drop some, here are some things you can try before you give up'.

A friend was telling me that in China you start a special diet once your baby is born.  I bet money it includes things like oatmeal, flaxseed and brewers yeast. And probably other helpful things that I don't even know about!  It's just odd that we are told over and over again how important breastfeeding is - 6 months at least, 1 year if you can.  But they don't give you all the tools accomplish that.  I wonder how much money insurance companies would save by helping moms breastfeed with a special diet.  Sick babies are expensive.  Multiple trips to the ER, Urgant Care Center, Dr. office.  Ear infections, tubes in ears.  I know that breastfed babies get sick all the time, so it's not an easy fix -- Miles is still coughing with a runny nose.  But research says they get sick less than non-breastfed babies.  Even if it's 25% less, that adds up to lots of dollars.

All I do know is that I'm so grateful for the internet and all the other moms with helpful suggestions. I will definitely be making these cookies for all my pregnant friends once their babies are born.  I may even compile a list of all the helpful things I tried so they don't feel as in the dark as I did.  And hopefully they will never have a problem with breastfeeding.  But I think more information is always better than less!

Peak

Well, I'm afraid Miles peaked too soon.  He rolled over at 3 months and 3 days and just hasn't done anything significant since.  Ok, that's a little harsh maybe, but you know what I mean.  I just really thought he'd impress us all by crawling... or at least be sitting up by now.  He's even a little behind on the sitting up thing -- Baby Center just sent me the email asking if he's doing it yet.  Oh the pressure!!  Not that I'm worried about him at all - I know he'll get there in his own time (and he is pretty darn close) but I'm just excited for all the new fun things he'll be able to do when he finally does sit up and start crawling.  Bath time will be SO much easier for one.  As will going out to eat - we can just plop him in the highchair with some toys and watch him go to town.  But for now, we put him in the highchair and stuff it with a blanket and still have to keep readjusting him as he slouches all over the place.

Good thing I'm this cute, right guys?

It's pretty smart actually.  He's like - I've got my whole life to sit up and be responsible,  I'm totally chillaxin for now!

Who wants to sit up when this is so much more comfortable!
I mean in all honesty who would bother sitting up when his mommy holds him all day long??

I'm trying mom, I really am
And I know everyone says be careful what you wish for - once they start crawling it's all downhill from there.  But I think Miles will just be so excited to be on the move.  And I don't mind chasing him (preparing to eat my words in 5...4...3...).  Plus I plan on getting one of those baby leashes!  Just kidding, I would never.   (I hope.)

Nana - come back so you can hold me!!
In other news - we've moved on to size 2 diapers.  Not that exciting news... but it does make me wanna cry... :(  Mostly because the bigger the diapers... the bigger the POOP!!!!

Here Kitty Kitty Kitty

Miles finally started noticing the cats this last month and he is just so fascinated with them.  I try to let him pet Sonic whenever I can.  The other day we bribed Sonic with his favorite toy so that Miles could play with him a little.

There is just something so scrumptious about his chunky little baby hands holding that toy chick that just makes me wanna EAT HIM UP!!  :)

Busy Busy Busy Busy

Oh my goodness -- weekends with Nick and Izzy seem to just fly by in a blur of non-stop GO GO GO action!  I seriously don't know where this weekend went.  One minute it was Friday morning and Tony was up at 3AM working with the Dublin office and now it's Monday night and he's about to start work at 1AM tomorrow with the London office.  His schedule is worse than Miles-- who refused to nap for more than 15 minutes at a time when his brother and sister were here and who decided to be wide awake from 3 AM - 5:30 AM this morning.

FINALLY crashed!
So our weekend was FULL of the kids playing with Miles, video games, skate boarding, Ikea, a new couch, basketball game, soccer game, basketball practice, more skate boarding, getting the kids pictures done and now assembling said Ikea couch.  And that's just what I can remember!

Please ignore the mess in the background
Seriously guys, can we leave Ikea already?

My big boy is just growing up way too fast - I'm pretty sure I feel some teeth trying to come in.  Stacy, the awesome photographer who took the kids pictures today, mentioned that he probably woke up this morning because of the teeth coming in.  Oh great!  I don't know what I'll do if that becomes a regular thing.  What isle is the baby Tylenol on?

Such a big boy

Holidays

Having fun at The Galleria mall
Well, my parents have gone home and we could not be more sad.  :(  Miles misses them terribly because his mean mommy doesn't hold him all day.  I miss them terribly because I desperately need to take a shower!  And because they are just so much fun to have around.  We've been finding toothpicks all around the house as reminders that they were here just a few short days ago.

My dad is going to be so mad he left these!
My father never leaves home without one.

I remember my sister being so devastated when my parents would leave TX after they'd visit us here when her son was little and I didn't really understand it at the time.  I was sad to see them leave, but I knew I'd see them again soon and I'd talk to them in probably just a few hours.  But now I completely understand.  Watching Miles with them just warms my heart like nothing else.  He loves them so much and they love him even more.  So having them leave and not be here every day to see him grow is very sad.  All the more reason for this blog and all the pictures I insist on posting on here.  I promise to keep up with it.  I cannot let my family miss out on all the wonderful little things Miles does day to day.  Even this fun noise he likes to make when he's mad!  :)

So, with my parents leaving this marks the end of the holidays for us.  Since I don't really celebrate Christmas (although we do give presents to the kids and enjoy being lazy and having time off of work for Tony) I didn't really have much to post.  We had Nick and Izzy for the holidays.  They stayed a week with us and we had a week full of video games, much playing on the computer and days and days of not even getting out of our pjs.  It was so nice, but a lot more work for me than I expected it to be (hence my lack of posts).  Miles, however, was greatly spoiled by his sister never letting him cry for even a minute.  She would stop playing her video game to pick him up while I was doing laundry or the three times as many dishes as normal (can kids ever use the same glass twice? :)).  Izzy is too sweet though and such a great big sis!  But I'm afraid she created a monster that my parents made even worse!  But if I can't spoil him now...when can I?

While we were off, I made a delicious ham for dinner.  Complete with scalloped potatoes (from scratch!), rolls, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole and mac and cheese!  I was Martha-freakin-Stewart and everyone was impressed, but none more than me.

The highlight of the presents this year was, by far, the Kinect!  We've had way to much fun playing Kinect games.  Thanks to Bill, my brother-in-law, for forcing us to get one! :)  Thanks even more for the WAY too many games you sent for us to play on it.  Whenever my husband comes out from the glow of the Xbox, I'm sure he will thank you also.

And now back to just Miles and me home by ourselves.  I see many cold walks in our future to get us out of the house so Miles can see another person's face besides my own.

Somebody save me from these crazy people!!

Nana and Papa

Nana and Papa are finally here... and I don't think we'll let them leave!  Miles just ADORES them.  He seriously cannot get enough of them and it is going to break both our hearts when they leave tomorrow.  :(

But in there mean time here are some fun pictures of Miles and Papa playing with the adorable dancing monkey that his Aunt Tricia bought him.  I think it's safe to say that he LOVES it!

I don't know who I love more - Papa or this dancing monkey

Oh monkey, you crack me up!

I love you monkey friend!

And here's a video of how very much he does love it!

My parents are troopers I tell you.  We've been on several walks around Dallas.  On Thursday we walked all the way to Victory Plaza where my mother finally found her glasses.

Thankfully it was lovely out!

We've had fun playing the Kinect!
She only allowed this pictures because she looks so skinny!
And watching John Wayne movies (I had no idea they were all so good!)
And we couldn't watch all those John Wayne movies without Papa buying his grandson some cowboy boots!
Look out -- I'm a tough guy!

These boots are good for walking!
Well... they can't fly home if I refuse to take them to the airport!!!  Muah ha ha ha ha ha ha...
